Grand Prix Garage - GPL

The workings of GPL online

Racing GPL online is a great experience. Competing with human drivers from all over the world gives the sim a new dimension. A LAN would be the ideal medium to race online, but people would have to gather in the same room and bring along their equipment. Dialing into a specialised race site would also work, but leads to high communications costs. So we find ourselves racing over the Internet (see VROC in the links section). Given the drawbacks of the Internet, it is amazing how well it goes. There are however a number of consequences that have to be reckoned with.

The following pages deal with the aspect of racing GPL over the Internet:

  1. A general discussion on what you may experience when in the car
  2. All technical details concerning bandwidth, latency etc.
